She smiles, she runs, she jumps, and then she smiles again. Shawn Johnson is just too cute to not win gold. But there she was winning silver again. Finally on her last event she won gold! Who couldn’t be happy for the 16 year old bundle of joy? These are the kind of stories that have many Kansans yawning at work not for boredom, but for lack of sleep from the nightly exercise of watching unbelievably fit people perform skills beyond our imagination. Shawn is from nearby Iowa which makes cheering for her even easier. West Des Moines was a corn field only a few years back (I know I lived there!), now it is the home of an Olympic Champion. What took only a few moments to perform took a lifetime to prepare. It was the years of practice that brought the champion to the point of opportunity. Christ dying on the cross serves no value except for the perfection that came before. The value of his death toward our forgiveness is directly related to the sinless perfection of the life lived in advance of the death. All that came before the cross brought the moment of the cross to the pinnacle of significance. Jesus said, “If I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw all peoples to Myself.” Jesus was so near to some of those that saw him, that they could not bring themselves to accept the significance of his actions on their behalf. He came unto his own people and they did not believe him, but clearly those who do believe him, he gives the power for them to be called children of God.
